Cigarettes and Beer

Woke this morning
Headache to kill
Cough that won’t quit
Popped another pill

Drag to the fridge
Looking for a beer
Get things started
To having not a care

Ashtray running over
They must be mine
Can’t remember last night
But had a good time

Need a carton of cigarettes
Down to my last beer
Go the market
Get this old car in gear

Take side streets
Can’t get pulled
Licenses suspended
No tags on this jewel

Gage on empty
I don’t really care
As long as I can get
My cigarettes and beer

I haven’t eaten
In I don’t know when
Late notice
My heat will end

Who can I call
Who can I tell
Won’t let me freeze
That I know well

The family knows
Every now and then
I need help
That’s why we have kin

Sputtered into the drive
Pizza driver glaring
“Next time friend”
Not a dime to spare

Can you drop that check by
You know I can’t drive
While you are at it
Can you spare another five

Yes mother
I have almost quit
No reason at all
To throw such a fit

You can check the fridge
No beer to be found
Can I get another ten
To get me to town

Yes Mother
I know you are old
But you don’t really want
Me out in the cold

After all Mother
Pay the rent, I know you care
I’ll buy my own damn
Cigarettes and beer
